We occupy a rather obscure, sparsely populated, place in the cosmos. We are about two-thirds of the way out on one of the spiral arms of a magnificent galaxy we call the milky way. This galaxy has a diameter of 100,000 light years and if we lived closer in towards the center, the day- and night-time skies would be a blazing, dazzling glory of swirling nebulas and stars more brilliant than baskets of the finest jewels strewn across black velvet.
Also, there are places in the universe where groups of galaxies swirl and dance in close proximity (where galaxies are concerned, close proximity is on the order of hundreds of thousands of light years apart). In such neighborhoods, we would be treated to a sky emblazoned with multicolored pinwheels made from hundreds of billions of stars.
This is not fantasy. Such places exist. We can see them through our telescopes. When we see a hundred billion stars or beautiful swirling nebulas created from titanic stellar cataclysms, or just our own star, the sun, we are witnessing the Forge of Creation. In a direct, very real, and personal way, we are witnessing the divine alchemy of the transmutation of elements. The entire periodic table is being created as we watch. This is synonymous with the statement The universe is being created as we watch. Every element you see on this planet was made this way. Every element that comprises your body was forged by the fabric of life inside stars. You are divine not as a matter of theological speculation but rather you are divine by virtue of the transformative act of creation that forged you...
